How to choose an approach

There is no best tool, only a good fit for your question, team and budget. Work through these questions in order.

Question 01

Which source answers my question?

Presence of shy mammals at a site: camera traps. Movement of individuals: GPS tracking. Vocal species or bats: acoustic monitoring. Habitat and change: remote sensing. Abundance with known effort: structured field surveys. Wide coverage over many places: citizen science. Many projects combine two or more; see the use cases.

Question 02

Do I run it myself or use a ready platform?

A · Do it yourself, open source

  • Free or low licence cost, transparent code, full control.
  • Desktop tools work offline; data stays on your machine.
  • Needs servers, updates and someone to maintain them; sharing, backups and archiving are up to you.

B · Ready-made hosted platform

  • No infrastructure to run, team access, built-in AI and storage.
  • You depend on a provider's terms, pricing and continuity.
  • Check data use and export options before you commit.

Question 03

Can I get my data out in an open standard?

Ask for export to Darwin Core, Camtrap DP, the Movebank format or plain GeoTIFF, depending on the source. If a tool cannot export, your archive depends on that tool. See standards.

Question 04

Who can see exact locations?

Check whether you can restrict access and generalise coordinates in shared copies, especially for sensitive species and for tracking data.

Question 05

Is my data used to train models, and can I say no?

Read the terms. Some providers use uploaded data for model training by default, others only with opt-in.

Question 06

Can people review and correct automatic labels?

AI speeds up sorting images and sounds, but performance varies with species, region and conditions. Choose tools that keep a human review step and record who or what made each label.

Question 07

What happens after the project ends?

Plan where the data will be archived (for example GBIF, Movebank or a repository) before the funding or the tool runs out.
